2 July 2009 @ 19:49Email Full-resolution Photos From the iPhone 3G S

I was searching for a way to send multiple photos from the iPhone in a single email, and what I found instead was something even better.

Every time that I wanted to email a photo, I naturally went to that photo and tapped the Share button, followed by the “Email Photo” button. This attaches a single photo to a new email. Then there were times that I wanted to attach another photo to the email. Instinct told me to click the home button and tap the Photos button. Unfortunately, this brought me back to my new message that had a single photo attached.

Then I had one of those “Eureka!” moments — “Copy and Paste!”

Copy a photo on the iPhoneYes, if you tap and hold on a photo in either album view or single view, you will get the option to Copy. So, I copied, clicked Home, then tapped Mail, tapped Compose, and pasted the photo in the body. Then I clicked Home again, tapped Photos, found another photo, tapped and held, Copy, return to Mail and pasted the next photo into the body. Finally, I filled in the recipient, subject, and body, and sent the email to myself as a test.

What I found was, the photos contained in the email were full-resolution 2048×1536 photos (1600×1200 on the original iPhone), not the puny 800×600 photos that get sent via the “Share” method.

Yeah, and after this revelation, I had another “Eureka!” moment. I realized that there is a Share button in Album view that allows you to select multiple photos to email. Well, I feel a bit stupid. But wait! Those were full-resolution 2048×1536 photos that I emailed using the Copy/Paste method. I guess I don’t feel so bad after all.

Note: As pointed out by commenter Ryan, it is possible to use the Copy button in Photos to copy/paste multiple photos into an email.

29 June 2009 @ 12:45What Happens In the Holodeck, Stays In the Holodeck – shirt

I always wanted to “experiment” with the Holodeck from Star Trek: The Next Generation. You simply tell the computer what scenario you want to participate in, and it creates for you a near-perfect representation of reality (or what you want to be reality wink, wink). That is why this shirt reads “What Happens In the Holodeck, Stays In the Holodeck”.

Be sure not to disable the safety protocols. Unless you’re into that sort of thing.

25 June 2009 @ 13:52Voice Control Texting for the iPhone

iPhone Voice ControlIt sounds like an oxymoron, I know, but texting via Voice Control seems like the natural next step for Apple’s iPhone.

You may be thinking, “If you’re going to open your mouth to speak a message, why not just call the person instead of message them?” Well, there are often times when the circumstances don’t make a phone call feasable for one or both parties involved in the conversation. For instance, when you’re in a library or another quiet environment.

So, then what’s the point of speaking a text message? Firstly, speaking is usually a lot quicker than typing. Secondly, texting while driving is dangerous and often times illegal. This is where Voice Control text messaging would come into play. Apple has already built in voice recognition into the iPhone 3G S, so it shouldn’t be too much of a stretch to extend Voice Control’s abilities to speech-to-text message compositon.

Such a feature enhancement would allow Apple to tout the iPhone as one of the safest phones on the market.

Cross your fingers and look for this feature in a future iPhone update.

20 June 2009 @ 21:20Mac OS X on Dell Mini 10, not so easy

Installing Mac OS X on the Dell Inspiron 1011 proved to be more difficult than expected. Using a retail version of v10.5.0 and following this single USB method here, I was able to get the OS installed and mostly functional (sound doesn’t work). The natural next step was to update to 10.5.7 using the Combo Updater. All seemed to go well until the reboot which stuck at the gray screen with the spinning icon. After several reboots and finally using the verbose option (-v), I realized that the boot process was crapping out with a kernel panic and a mention of power management. Unless I can find a workaround, the Mini is going back to v.10.5.0 (or maybe even Windows XP).

Little did I know, this update would make the Mini 10 unusable
