23 July 2008 @ 15:50Papillon to be remade

According to The New Zealand Herald, the movie Papillon (1973) is set to be remade by the Los Angeles producer, Branko Lustig, responsible for films such as Schindler’s List and Gladiator, and John Kelly, who made The Black Dahlia.

The original Papillon starred Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman as a pair of prisoners condemned to a penal colony in French Guiana. Papillon (McQueen) determined to escape but attempt after attempt met with difficulty, resulting in eventual recapture. He continued his attempts to escape with the help of Louis Dega (Hoffman) despite incarcerations in solitary confinement as punishment.

This will certainly be a difficult film to remake, as the original was so well done by two iconic actors.

23 July 2008 @ 9:08How to Lose Friends & Alienate People - trailer

Simon Pegg and Jeff Bridges star in How to Lose Friends & Alienate People. That sounds like a great combination to me. Synopsis, trailer, and stills below.

Sidney Young is a disillusioned intellectual who both adores and despises the world of celebrity, fame and glamour. His alternative magazine, Post Modern Review, pokes fun at the media obsessed stars and bucks trends, and so when Young is offered a job at the diametrically opposed conservative New York based Sharps magazine its something of a shock! It seems Sharps editor Clayton Harding is amused by Young’s disruption of a post-BAFTA party with a pig posing as Babe. Thus begins Sidney’s descent into success - his gradual move from derided outsider to confidante of starlet Sophie Maes - and a love affair with colleague Alison Olsen, that will either make him or break him.

Directed by: Robert B. Weide

Starring: Simon Pegg, Kirsten Dunst, Jeff Bridges, Megan Fox, Danny Huston, and Gillian Anderson

22 July 2008 @ 10:47C. S. Lewis’ Space Trilogy

An article over at Universe Today titled “Colonizing Venus With Floating Cities” sparked my interest while at the same time reminding me of the awesome Space Trilogy by C. S. Lewis that I read as a teen. The article is referring to floating colonies in the atmosphere of Venus, however the book I am reminded of has floating islands of vegetation on the surface of Venus.

Book 2 of the trilogy titled “Perelandra” deals with Elwin Ransom’s travel to Venus (Perelandra) after his return from Mars in the first book, “Out of the Silent Planet”. Perelandra is covered primarily by an ocean on which there are floating rafts of vegetation. There is a single mountain on the planet referred to as the “Fixed Land” on which the human inhabitants are forbidden to sleep. When Ransom’s foe, Professor Weston, arrives on Perelandra with the intent of tempting the queen of the planet to spend a night on the forbidden “Fixed Land”, Ransom takes it upon himself to act as the counter-tempter. As with other works by C. S. Lewis, “Perelandra” contains many parallels with Christian theology, and deals with temptation and the Fall of Man.

C. S. Lewis’ Space Trilogy is an awesome set of science fiction books, each one uniquely different.
