27 November 2007 @ 8:58The Buttons Have Moved!

Why, Apple, did you swap the eject and menu buttons on the Leopard version of DVD Player.app? I find myself many times ejecting a DVD when I am intending, out of habit, to go to the menu.

26 November 2007 @ 11:28QuickTime 7.3 Buffer Overflow Exploit

Secunia has issued a security advisory (SA27755) for a buffer overflow exploit in QuickTime and has labeled it as “extremely critical”.

The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error when processing RTSP replies and can be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer overflow via a specially crafted RTSP reply containing an overly long “Content-Type” header.

26 November 2007 @ 10:44Holiday Buyers Take Advantage of Refurbs

Apple Online StoreThe Refurbished iPod section of the Apple Store arrived at this end of the holiday weekend with hardly any iPods left in stock. Good news for Apple, bad news for me, as I was planning on picking up a refurbished iPod nano.

Update 1:45 pm: Apple now has some more iPods listed on their refurb page.

25 November 2007 @ 23:44Entry Level Digital Camera Recommendations

Are you looking for an entry level digital camera for yourself or someone else this Christmas? Here are my recommendations — Kodak EasyShare C613, Canon PowerShot A560, and Nikon Coolpix L11. The three cameras are all at least 6 megapixels, with the Canon leading the pack with 7.1 megapixels of resolution. The Canon also leads the way with 4x of optical zoom versus 3x of optical zoom for the Kodak and the Nikon. By the way, if you ever see “digital zoom” specs advertised, just ignore them. You will get your best photos by using only the optical zoom.

One reason I picked these three cameras is that they use both the readily available and economical AA batteries and SD memory cards. Other cameras use proprietary battery formats that you will have to go back to the manufacturer to find, and when you do find them, will pay up to 10x what the AA batteries cost you. The same goes for the SD memory card. You can find one almost anywhere and for very little money. The going rate for a 1GB SD card is about $9 right now. Compare that to what a 1GB memory stick would cost you if you bought a Sony brand camera — anywhere from $25 to $35.

In my opinion, you can’t go wrong with any of these three cameras.

ectopsd4000.JPGI stopped by Circuit City’s website this morning and bought the Toshiba S-D4000. Not a bad deal for a name brand DVD player.

23 November 2007 @ 2:17The Apple Store is Down

backsoon1.gifYeah, I got up early so that I would be ready to check out the Black Friday deals that Apple said would start at 12:01 am PST. Unfortunately, it is now 12:16 am PST and the Apple Store is still down.

Update: It is 12:42 am PST and the store is now accessible.

22 November 2007 @ 12:33Top Portables

Here is a list of top notebooks and portables. I find it interesting that the Asus Eee PC and the Nokia N810 are at the top of the list.  The Eee PC is even enticing for me, as a small-form factor notebook which runs linux.
