20 May 2008 @ 11:058-core Mac Pro arrived

My refurbished 8-core 2.8GHz Mac Pro arrived a few days later than expected, but I’m typing this on it now. Everything is working well. I followed this hint in order to have Time Machine pickup where it left off, instead of starting with an all new backup.

I had an extra 8GB of memory to install for a total of 10GB. To do this, you have to take the two chips installed by Apple and move those to the bottom riser. Then fill the top riser with the larger chips in pairs. The memory has to be a matching pair in DIMM1 and DIMM2, a matching pair in DIMM3 and DIMM4, etc. Do not put a matched pair in DIMM2 and DIMM3 on the same card, or a matched pair in DIMM1 on the top riser and DIMM1 on the bottom riser. Here is Apple’s instructions with an illustration showing how to install the memory.
