As a fan of “Lost”, I was curious what writer/director J.J Abrams would bring to the table with “Fringe”. The pilot episode aired last night, and as it opened with a scene of passengers on a plane in an electrical storm, I had the sense of deja vu — “Don’t tell me this plane is going to crash on an island.” However that turned out not to be the case. Instead, the next few scenes felt like an episode straight out of “The X-Files”.
Hmm, a successor to “The X-Files” in the paranormal genre. This got the attention of a big “X-Files” fan here. In the end, I felt that Fringe was a bit slow, and not yet qualified to be called an “X-Files replacement”. It definitely has some potential to be great, and I am interested in seeing how things progress, and interested to see more episodes dealing with “fringe science”.
One thing that visually annoyed me was the placement of the location text in the video rather than overlayed like subtitles. Some people may like this, but I thought the novelty wore off rather quickly.
