Seeing the FreeLoader Portable Solar Charger at ThinkGeek spurred me to think of just how much sense a solar charger makes — a lot, actually.
It’s one thing to carry around extra batteries or a battery “booster” for your portable electronic devices, but what happens when those run empty and there is no power outlet to be found? You’re just out of luck.
This is where solar energy comes into play. It’s free, and renewable. Most of these portable solar chargers have a built-in rechargeable battery that charges via solar energy and is available to use whenever you need it. What this means is that if you allow the charger to charge in the sunlight, it will be available for use even at night. Amazing, huh! :)
Seriously though, having a device like this could be a lifesaver for powering a dead cellphone when you are lost or stranded.
In addition to cellphones, a solar charger can come in handy for charging iPods, MP3 players, PDAs, and practically any other small electronics that have rechargeable batteries.
