InformationWeek reports that AT&T will be upgrading their network to 3G. This should provide even more of a push for Apple to make the iPhone 3G-capable. In London this month, Jobs when asked why 3G was not supported with the iPhone, responded that “[t]he 3G chipsets are real power hogs. Handset battery life cuts power to 2-3 hours.” Yeah yeah, we’ve heard it before. “Our phone has a talk time of 8 hours and that’s really important when you want to use your phone for internet and music. 3G needs to get back up to 5+ hours, something we think well see later next year. … WiFi is way faster than any 3G network. Energy efficient EDGE with better, faster WiFi. That’s why we chose it.”
AT&T’s upgrades will occur during October and November. The upgrade will boost network speeds to 500 to 800 kilobits per second (kbps), from its current speed of about 120 kbps.

I just noticed some nice savings on Apple products in the refurbished section of the store. In laptop lineup, you can get a MacBook for as little as $799. They are also selling a refurbished iMac 17-inch 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo for $749. That’s a great deal, in my opinion! Mac Minis start at $479. Also, iPods start at $49, and an 8GB iPhone can be had for only $349. Keep in mind that all refurbished products come with a 1-year warranty.

Amazon’s newly launched music store (Amazon MP3) claims to have the world’s largest selection of DRM-free music. As with iTunes Music Store’s DRM-free downloads, these songs will play in most MP3 players. The difference being, iTunes’ DRM-free songs are AAC and $1.29 each (currently only music from EMI), while Amazon’s are MP3 and $0.99 each ($0.89 each for top 100 songs). As of now, there are 2 million songs available from Amazon MP3. Amazon’s download application is needed to download albums and is currently available for Window and Mac, with a Linux version coming soon. Singles may be downloaded directly from a browser.
Amazon MP3 may be iTunes’ first real competition.
Below are some best-selling MP3 albums from Amazon.
