21 September 2007 @ 14:12iPod touch Display Problems Resolved

It appears that Apple has addressed and resolved the problems that some customers had with their iPod touch displays. Customers at the MacRumors forums have confirmed that the defective iPod touchs had serial numbers beginning with 9C737, and that units with serial numbers beginning with 9C738 seem to be free of problems.

19 September 2007 @ 8:48Video-out for the iPhone

iphone_video_options.jpgAs pointed out by Macenstein, this picture from the Engadget gallery shows the option of “TV Out” in what is most likely a simple software update of the iPhone.

One of my initial complaints of the iPhone was its lack of any video out option for watching videos on a TV. I am pleased to see this addition to the iPhone. Keep in mind, as I wrote about Apple crippling the “video out” on the new generation of iPods, you will not be able to use your old set of AV cables to connect your iPod or iPhone to a television. This all done through the dock connector now, and the adapter must be one with Apple’s authentication chip.

One other curiosity I see is the “Closed Captioning” option under the Video section. Are switchable subtitles a new feature of MP4’s that I haven’t heard of before?

18 September 2007 @ 5:06Apple UK Special Event

iphone.jpgApple just released the iPhone for the UK and stated that the carrier will be O2.

The iPhone will go on sale for £269 including VAT starting November 9.

There are new iPhone commercials for the UK. They are the same as the US versions, but with British voice-over. The Guardian has replaced the New York Times, and O2 has replaced AT&T.

The CEO of O2 UK, Matthew Key, takes the floor. “I’ve seen hundreds of devices every year, and within a few minutes of playing with the iPhone I knew it as a breakthrough product.”

Unlimited data with £35, 45, 55 plans. Visual Voicemail works. GPRS networked, not 3G. Key states that “[O2] created an agreement for 7,500 WiFi spots in the UK.”

Steve explains the reason for no 3G support. “”The 3G chipsets are real power hogs. Handset battery life cuts power to 2-3 hours. Our phone has a talk time of 8 hours and that’s really important when you want to use your phone for internet and music. 3G needs to get back up to 5+ hours, something we think well see later next year.”

“Cloud is the WiFi provider, and yes, it’s free.” according to Key.

iPhone activation will be done through iTunes just like in the US.

iTunes WiFi Music Store will be available later this month.

Key elaborates on contract details. “18 months contract. There is a limit: 1,400 internet pages per day would break the deal as part of fair usage agreement.”

By launch, only 30% of O2’s network will have EDGE.

Have you thought about opening the iPhone to 3rd parties? Steve’s reply: “Yes, we’ve already done that with Web 2.0. We’re looking at more intimate apps. But people hold their phones to a higher standard than their PC. The more open you are, the less predictable.”

£900 for 18 months on up to £1260. Any assurance you won’t slash the price by 1/3rd? (Laughter.) Steve’s reply: “I don’t think that’s going to happen. But this is technology so you never know. We have no plans to change the pricing, but we guarantee it will change in the future just like all technology products. We’re working on the next iPhone and the next one after that. That’s what our customers expect.”

Do you feel a 2 megapixel would be a concern to European customers? Steve’s reply: “No, the camera is great. More megapixels don’t make a better camera, the iPhone is actually a great camera, especially with great lighting.”

Unlimited data packages: will those go to other contracts as well? Matthew’s reply: “On 1st October we’ll be rolling those out for all out customers.” Steve’s reply: “It’s the future.”

That wraps up Apple’s UK Special Event.

17 September 2007 @ 11:15Ars Technica reviews iPod touch

Ars Technica has an in-depth review of the iPod touch. Ars also confirms that the iPod touch screen is inferior to the iPhone’s screen. Other than that, the iPod touch still sounds like a nice device.

15 September 2007 @ 13:28iPod touch display not up to par?

There have been many reports of the iPod touch’s display not being as good as that of the iPhone. I look at some of the pictures, and I see a definite difference, but it is the difference I see with many LCD’s when viewing at an angle. Is this truly a case of bad or cheap LCD’s being used in the iPod touch?

Engadget is also reporting that “simply bringing a defective unit back to an Apple Store will result in an immediate swap.”

14 September 2007 @ 11:53Corvette C5 font

Back in 2002 I created this font modeled after the font on the C5 Corvettes. I made it available on my webserver at home, and a few people downloaded it and liked it. The following year I moved, changed jobs, and just became rather busy, and I no longer had the font hosted for public download. It occurred to me yesterday, that if I still had the font I should put it out here for others to use.

The font is nothing fancy. It consists of letters and numbers and is only uppercase.

13 September 2007 @ 17:20Folding@home installers

If you haven’t heard of Folding@home, it is a distributed computing effort organized by Stanford University to aid in the study of how proteins fold.

From Stanford’s site:

What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease? Proteins are biology’s workhorses — its “nanomachines.” Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or “fold.” The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.

If you are interesting in helping out this effort, consider joining Team MacAddict4Life (team #18) whether you have a Mac or a PC.

I have created two installers for Mac users — one for PowerPC processors and one for Intel processors.

Download:

QuickFold (PowerPC)
QuickFold (Intel)

Update:
I have decided to discontinue work on QuickFold. It will be better for everyone, and better for troubleshooting, if everyone is using the same installer. It is also difficult for me to keep up with Stanford’s frequent beta expirations.
Please visit Stanford’s download page for up-to-date installers.
