A new Lincoln commercial titled “Lift Off” features Cat Power singing a cover of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” (aka “Ground Control to Major Tom”) from the Space Oddity album. Very cool commercial with some nice music. Cat Power’s version of Space Oddity is not yet available, but you can find other music by Cat Power on iTunes or AmazonMP3.

As far as commercials go, this one for Hovis Bread is pretty darn good. It tells quite a story in only 2 minutes.
Hovis’s ad depicts the highs and lows experienced by Britain during the company’s existence including the first world war, the suffragette movement, the first motor car, the second world war, the Queen’s coronation in 1953, the swinging sixties, England winning the 1966 World Cup, the 1980s miners’ strike and the Millennium celebrations. Digital SLR cameras with the ability to shoot high definition video are hot stuff right now. The Nikon D90 was the first, but it exhibited a flaw known as “jelly movement”. Now Canon has post a sample of what the EOS 5D Mark II can do with video. Here is a sample, but you can go to Canon’s site to see it in higher resolution. The clarity and quality of the video is very nice, and doesn’t seem to exhibit any “jelly movement” in in of the shots.

The problem I was looking to solve was that of iPhones and iPod touches not being able to play most of the videos on my site, that is videos that utilized the flash video player. My thought to fix this was to create two separate divs that were toggled between based on the User Agent.
First of all, I’m not well-versed in javascript, but I cobbled together a solution that mostly works.
First, I created a javascript file iphonevid.js

Then I inserted the javascript in the <head> section of the page:

Next I inserted the “onload” event to the <body> tag:

Finally, I created two separate divs — one with my usual flash video player with id=”flashvid” and style=”display:block” and the second with embedded quicktime video, id=”iphonevid” and style=”display:none” .

As I said earlier, the solution mostly works. On a page with just one showing video, it works like a charm, but on the front page of the blog where there is sometimes more than one video, the toggling only works on the first set. I’m sure this could be fixed by someone with a bit more javascript knowledge than myself. If you know how to fix this issue, let me know.
And if you don’t have an iPhone to test this with, you can use Safari. With the Develop menu enabled, the User Agent can easily be changed.
