26 October 2007 @ 14:59Time Machine Cannot Backup to Wireless Drives

Time MachineAppleInsider is reporting that Leopard does not support backup to Airport Extreme attached drives.

At one point, Apple’s website stated, “With a hard disk connected to your AirPort Extreme Base Station, all the Macs in your house can use Time Machine to back up wirelessly [...] Simply select your AirPort Disk as the backup disk for each computer and the whole family can enjoy the benefits of Time Machine.”

My copy of Leopard has not yet arrived, so I cannot verify this. This is disappointing news. One has to wonder if this was a feature that was not complete before the deadline, and will instead be added in a future update.

25 October 2007 @ 12:38Journalists Received Leopard Early, But Not Developers

John Gruber pointed out The New York Times article where David Pogue says, “I pushed my system hard for a week using the final Leopard software…”

I’m dissappointed in Apple for not providing their developers the same lead time on the final version of Leopard. Instead, developers are left to hurriedly test their applications on October 26, and try to release bug fixes as soon as possible.

25 October 2007 @ 11:15FileMaker and Leopard

FileMaker 9FileMaker, Inc has a note on their site recommending that FileMaker 9 users not upgrade to Leopard yet. Compatibility updates are currently being worked on.

We are very excited about the release of Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5). We are currently working on Leopard compatibility updates for FileMaker Pro 9, FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced, FileMaker Server 9 and FileMaker Server 9 Advanced. At this time FileMaker does not recommend the use of FileMaker 9 products on computers running Mac OS X Leopard.

If you would like to be notified when these updates become available, please subscribe to FileMaker News.

We also do not recommend the use of earlier versions of FileMaker software on Mac OS X Leopard as we have not performed compatibility testing.

Update: FileMaker has revealed the known issues:

  • The Instant Web Publishing feature does not work.
  • On Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5), each language version of FileMaker Pro 9 and FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced works only when the Mac OS System Preference “International Formats Region” is set to a specific region. For example, the English language version of FileMaker works only when the region is United States. It does not work when the region is United Kingdom, or Australia, or France, or any other region. 24 October 2007 @ 15:46Storm Worm Strikes Back

There is an interesting read over at Network World concerning some recent discoveries pertaining to the Storm Worm botnet.

The worm can figure out which users are trying to probe its command-and-control servers, and it retaliates by launching DDoS attacks against them, shutting down their Internet access for days, says Josh Korman, host-protection architect for IBM/ISS, who led a session on network threats.

24 October 2007 @ 9:45it simply their OS is suck

There is so much that is wrong with this, I am actually hoping this is the result of a brain transplant gone awry. Here are a few gems from the site. (link)

Normally, Windows crash because of third party faulty hardware, for MAC, it simply their OS is suck. Just wonder why Apple Sweden website is running Solaris, not MAC OSX. Maybe they know their OS is not reliable.

[...] Come on! This is the most funniest thing of all. I am wondering about this really. I mean Microsoft Office runs on Microsoft Windows. It just ported to MAC doesn’t mean we should switch to MAC. I just ask myself why should I switch when it’s the exactly same on the mac?

[...] Apple says their OS is based on Unix, so it is more secure. But, in reality, the reason is that they can’t make OS from scratch like Windows, so they adopted FreeBSD and put some make-up on it.

Of course, there are many viruses for Windows, but Apple forgot to state that there are many Antiviruses choices for Windows users as well. Most PCs users who’ve got antivirus never really suffers from virus problem too. MAC is not virus free (Bad boy can release viruses) and Antivirus choice is very limited if there’s any.

And the best argument of them all:

It seems that Apple thinks that they’ve revolutionized computing by developing mediocre software for viewing digital photos, editing video, burning CDs and DVDs and listening to music. Well they haven’t!

I challenge anyone to find 10 more ridiculous reasons than these.

24 October 2007 @ 9:30Bonjour on iPhone

Erica Sadun over at TUAW.com has successfully gotten Bonjour (mDNS) running on the iPhone.

So what makes this exciting? With Bonjour, your iPhone and touch can talk to your Mac. They can talk to printers or to each other. They can browse for available services or provide their own as a server. What I put together was a pair of applications: PicSend and PicListen. These apps allow you to subscribe to a camera on another person’s iPhone. Just tell that iPhone to snap a picture and within seconds that picture appears on your own screen. (link)

Sadun has a beta app called SendFile available for download. With this app you can select a file to share, then on another iPhone or touch, you scan for the shared file.

You can find the download link here as well as more information about the app and future plans.
