27 May 2008 @ 7:30Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Yesterday I took the family to see the new Indiana Jones movie. Oddly enough, it was my 8 year old who first mentioned wanting to see it. She has never before seen an Indiana Jones movies, so I was a bit surprised by her request.

I found Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull just as entertaining as the previous Indy movies. There were a couple times that I started to think that the action was getting just a bit too corny, but then I would remind myself that all the other Indy movies were just as silly.

My eight-year-old’s attention was pretty much fixed on the screen during the whole movie. I think she might have spoke up two times during the entire move: “Daddy, is that guy Indiana Jones?” and “Daddy, why do those black bubbles keep showing up on the screen?” After the movie was over she said to me, “I want to see the other Indiana Jones movies.”

If you enjoyed any of the previous Indiana Jones movies, then I would definitely recommend Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

25 May 2008 @ 17:58Righteous Kill trailer

Righteous Kill looks pretty good.

Two veteran New York City detectives (De Niro and Pacino) work to identify the possible connection between a recent murder and a case they believe they solved years ago; is there a serial killer on the loose, and did they perhaps put the wrong person behind bars?

Righteous Kill stars:
Robert De Niro
Al Pacino
Carla Gugino
Donnie Wahlberg
John Leguizamo

It’s nice to see Donnie Wahlberg and John Leguizamo together again after The Kill Point.

23 May 2008 @ 7:47Flip into Video

The genre of “Point & Shoot” camcorders is becoming more and more popular these days with everyone interested in making their own videos and sharing them with the world. One company is dominating the point & shoot camcorder right now, and that is Pure Digital with their different varieties and colors of their Flip Video Camcorder - Flip Video, Flip Ultra, and Flip Mino.

Back of Flip VideoThe Flip Video is pocket-sized and simple to use. There isn’t an abundance of buttons as with some camcorders. With the Flip, the user can concentrate on capturing the moment, rather than fumbling with settings. Right out of the box, the Flip is ready to record. The is no need to buy tape or memory cards, as the Flip has its own built-in storage. The 2GB model is capable of recording 60 minutes of 640×480 (VGA-quality) MPEG-4 video. The Flip has three buttons on the back — Play, Record, and Delete. Also on the back is a 1.5-inch LCD and speaker. On the side of the Flip is a swing out USB plug for conveniently connecting the Flip to a computer without the need to carry an additional cable. The only cable you might need is the included TV cable which allows you to connect and view video from the Flip on a TV.

The Flip also comes with software that allows to easily upload your videos to AOL Video and YouTube as well as other sites. Basically the Flip is designed to take the complexity out of shooting and sharing video.

Interested in getting a Flip of your own? Check out this page of Point & Shoot Camcorders.

22 May 2008 @ 15:46HDTV and OTA broadcasts

A couple weeks ago, I came across a small set-top dipole television antenna that wasn’t being used, and decided I ought to give that to my parents who recently bought a 42-inch LCD HDTV. Their television programming comes mainly from a DISH satellite which is only standard definition, so I figured that if they could get some “free” high-definition programming, they would make better use of their new television.

AntennaAs I expected, the small dipole was able to pickup a few of the closest stations, and all were standard definition digital signal except for one which was in HD (the local ABC affiliate). Seeing this HD picture was enough to prompt my dad to buy a larger external antenna and rotor and mount it in an open space in the attic. Unfortunately, it turns out that he is only able to pickup a couple more channels and still none of the major networks broadcasting out of Birmingham (the ABC affiliate broadcasts from a different location). I was disappointed to find this out. My parents’ home is approx. 25-30 miles from the broadcasters, and there is a hill in the way. I feel like the hill is the main problem. I told my dad that I felt that many broadcasters weren’t transmitting at full power until after the February 2009 transition. Whether that is true or not, I don’t know, but I feel like I read that somewhere. Hopefully it will be enough to get my parents a couple more stations that broadcast in HD.

By the way, you don’t need a special antenna for digital/HD programming. The same antenna you have used all these years with your standard-definition tv will also receive digital broadcasts.

Keep reading for the bestselling television antennas.

21 May 2008 @ 12:45The Indian Runner

The Indian RunnerI watched The Indian Runner (1991) last night. It was in the queue of “Movies that I want to see”. The Indian Runner was written and directed by Sean Penn and stars David Morse, Viggo Mortensen, Valeria Golino, Patricia Arquette, Charles Bronson, and Dennis Hopper. Benicio Del Toro even makes an appearance for a few seconds.

I have to say this is a very well made, well directed, and well acted movie. The story is very sad. It tells of two brothers with very different lives resulting from very different perceptions of life.
