28 July 2008 @ 15:08Cuil tries to rival Google

According to CNN, Ex-Google emplyee, Anna Patterson, has been working on a search alternative to Google called Cuil. Patterson is claiming that Cuil has indexed 120 billion web pages, which is far greater than the 8.2 billion pages Google claimed it had indexed three years ago. Google no longer publishes its number of pages indexed. Patterson believes that Cuil has 3 times more pages indexed than Google does.

In my test searches, Cuil may be able to claim greater quantity, but I believe Google still has superior quality search results.

1 July 2008 @ 12:17Google improves indexing of Flash sites

Google has improved their indexing of Flash sites and Flash elements of websites.

Q: What content can Google better index from these Flash files?
All of the text that users can see as they interact with your Flash file. If your website contains Flash, the textual content in your Flash files can be used when Google generates a snippet for your website. Also, the words that appear in your Flash files can be used to match query terms in Google searches.

14 June 2008 @ 7:47Very pleased with ICDSoft

Web Hosting By ICDSoft.comYesterday I decided it was time to upgrade my hosting plan for this domain, because it was starting to get kinda cramped. So I logged into the ICDSoft hosting control panel and click “Upgrades”. The thinkunique.org domain was apparently being hosted on an older machine, and in order to upgrade, it needed to be migrated to a new machine. The upgrade was free, so it was pretty much a no-brainer.

I sent an email to support and asked what they needed me to do in order to prepare for the migration. Within a minute a got a reply that told me that I simply needed to order the upgrade and schedule a time for the migration.

I proceeded with the upgrade, set a time when I would like the migration to be performed (during the time of least traffic according to my logs), and went on about my business. Honestly part of me was just a slight bit nervous about the migration.

Well, as soon as I awoke this morning, I checked my email and had one from ICDSoft telling me that the migration was successful. As I log into different parts of my site, everything seems to be in working order.

I’ve been using ICDSoft for my hosting for a little over a year, and have been very pleased with their customer service and reliability.

30 May 2008 @ 7:22A new favicon for Google

I just noticed today that Google has a new favicon for their Analytics site. I wasn’t able to see it until I logged in.

Update: It’s not just the Analytics site, but all Google sites, I think.

12 May 2008 @ 14:46Privacy? What’s that?

Bell Canada’s use of DPI (deep packet inspection) has some privacy groups concerned. Should you be concerned too?

Current gear is so sophisticated that it can reconstitute e-mails and IM conversations out of asymmetric traffic flows and it can essentially peek “under the hood” of any non-encrypted packet to take a look at what it contains.

1 May 2008 @ 9:08A Mother’s Day Gift Idea

Not sure what to get your Mom, your Wife, your Sister? Does she have a passion for scrapbooking and documenting family memories? The biggest dilemma with scrapbooking is that often only a small handful of people get to see your hard work.  Why not give her the opportunity to make an online scrapbook.

First you will need a web host and domain. I recommend ICDSoft. They are a very reliable, full-featured hosting company who has many hosting plans to choose from. You will also need a domain name to go with that hosting, and ICDSoft can provide that for an extra $5.
ICDSoft Web Hosting with plans starting at $6/month

iWeb File menu - PublishOnce you have a web host, you will need an easy website creation tool such as iWeb (part of iLife, for Mac only). Apple has provided quite a few tutorials to get you started with iWeb, so don’t hesitate to check them out. Since you won’t be putting your site on a .Mac account, you will need to choose “Publish to a Folder…” from the File menu.

Once you have published your webpage to a folder, you will need an FTP client to upload your files to your new web host. There are many good FTP clients out there. Personally I use Cyberduck. Cyberduck is one of the few free, but fully-featured FTP clients available, and is definitely worth any donation that you can give. Another great FTP client is Transmit.

Uploading your page to your host will vary ever so slightly depending on the FTP client you choose. The basic method is, enter your domain name, username, and password in your FTP client, then connect/login to your site. Find the index file for the page you just published to a folder. Grab the index file and all the other files and folders in the same folder, and copy them to the www folder on your web host. Once that upload is complete, you will have published your newly created web page to your very own website.
